BOWRING, Okla. – A bald eagle is on the mend after finding itself in need of help earlier this week.

Elaine Gilliland was driving home when a large bird flew out of the brush and into her car on Sunday.

“We hit what we thought was a buzzard,” she said.

She and her husband kept driving until another driver flagged them down.

“We were like, ‘What in the world?” Julie Evans told KJRH. “When they turned the corner, the eagle lifted his head up and kind of looked at us like, ‘Hey, can you help me out here?’ We were flagging them down, trying to get them to stop.”

“They said, ‘You have a bald eagle in your grill,” Gilliland said. “So we got out and looked and definitely it was.”

Fortunately, it only took a few seconds to free the bird’s foot from the grill.

Evans wrapped the bird in a blanket and drove it to Wild Heart Ranch.

Workers say the bird suffered only minor injuries and had some skin shaved off one of its wings.

They say they do not know how the eagle’s injuries will affect its ability to fly.

If the damage is too severe, it will spend the rest of its life in a sanctuary or zoo.
